Dr Elise Fuller - Osteopath

Choosing a pillow can be very difficult, with so many options on the market and a wide price range.
It’s also rare that you can try before you buy, so it’s not until you get home to bed before you realise if your pillow isn’t really the perfect fit.
It’s also a very personal decision. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare though (hah, see what I did there?).
Here are a few tips you can arm yourselves with when choosing your next pillow.

  1. Know the difference between the materials it is made from.

Most professionals will recommend either a memory foam pillow or a dense pillow. A memory foam pillow will mold lightly to your head shape and will adjust as you move through the night allowing you to rest in your natural position for maximal comfort. A dense pillow is usually made with polyester or latex that will provide support for your head, neck and shoulders. Then there is your standard feather pillow that are the softest and gentlest of pillows. While it doesn’t really give you any support, for some people, it’s juuuuust right. There are other materials used to make pillows such as gel, but for the sake of this post, I will stick to these three as you will be more likely to come across them.

  1. Contour or classic pillows?

A contoured pillow is shaped to cradle your neck, providing you with solid support. They are usually slightly higher on one end with a dip in the middle for your head to fit in. As well as providing your head and neck with support, it will also allow better positioning for your shoulders. Classic pillows are the pillows without a contour and generally will not provide the same amount of support for your neck.

  1. Removable bits and bobs.

There are some pillows on the market (usually the memory foam or dense pillows) that allow you to take a layer off or remove bits. This allows you to adjust the height to your comfort, which I think is useful when you are investing money into a pillow.

  1. Why are you seeking a new pillow?

This is a question you MUST ask yourself before you buy a pillow. It will make narrowing down your options easier. Are you looking for support? Have you been waking up with headaches and pain? Are you looking for comfort? If you don’t know what you are looking for in a pillow, then you may waste your hard earned dollars on the wrong one!
