Nobody quite knows how much motherhood can hurt…and I am talking physical pain that accompanies caring for your children.

The number of times in practice that I nod, nod again, and smile a knowing smile when the mothers I see tell me that they are feeling sore from:

  • holding their baby, sometimes it feels like all day right!
  • bending over their baby to change them, feed them, “whatever” them
  • pushing prams for a lovely walk or simply to get space from holding them!
  • lifting up that beautiful baby that’s clinging to your leg…wanting you, needing you

AND then finally getting that child to bed, you get to stop and breathe and wow, how sore are you?

Where do you feel it?  Neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back??  All these areas are impacted with a considerable effort required when looking after children.  Especially in those early years huh.  I am coming out of this patch right now, a mother of a 5 and 3 year old, both boys who LOVE to run.  So now I am running  🙂 (that’s my little ones in the top picture at 2 years, and 2 days old)

Anyway back to your predicament because you have to get up the next day and do it all over again, and that pain, that pain doesn’t usually settle for you.  So what can you do?

The mums we treat for this kind of stuff firstly want relief, they are seeking a break from the daily struggle they are having. That’s where focused hands-on therapy to massage out tight muscles and free your spine and other surrounding joints is often the first step. Secondly, how on earth can you help yourself?  After all, this life that mums of young children have is not one where we can say “just don’t pick them up” or “find another way”.  That is not really a reality here so what can we teach you to help you each day to manage how your muscles and joints are reacting?  We can teach you plenty.  Teach you how to stretch your neck and back, strategies for movement so you free up your body AND help you so you can keep caring for your child and help yourself at the same time.  Let’s face it, mothers put themselves last and you are so important in your family to be well.

If this is sounding like you, if you can see yourself in this picture, maybe you need to consider making yourself a priority.
