Sarah has been a dedicated sports trainer at Balwyn Football Club for the past 4 years! She is passionate about treating a variety of sporting injuries, and assisting people in getting back to doing what they love! 🙏🌞

Did you know that the way we breathe can lead to changes in our musculoskeletal system? In turn, these changes can influence our posture and movement patterns! 🤔🫁

The diaphragm is a major muscle of breathing and attaches to the sternum, rib cage and spine! It plays the important role of changing the size and shape of the rib cage to create pressure changes in the lungs, allowing us to inhale and exhale efficiently! 🤯

We encourage you to try this breathing exercise to improve your belly-breathing:
- Kneel back onto your heels into child’s pose
- Breathe in via your nose, into your belly so that it balloons out towards the floor on the inhale and draw your belly up on the exhale.
- Focus on the expansion of your lower rib cage as you breathe in. With your knees in the way of your stomach, the air will expand out sideways to your ribcage.
Repeat 15 times.

Belly-breathing during physical activity can improve oxygen supply to your working muscles, enabling them to resist fatigue for longer and recover more efficiently! 😍

Here are a few variations of child’s pose for you to choose from - go with whatever is most comfortable for you! 😊

Most people are under the impression that arthritis equals pain, however a more suitable explanation is that arthritis equals stiffness. 💁‍♀️

If we consider that osteoarthritis causes joint stiffness, we can establish where the increase in muscular tension stems from - this can contribute significantly to their experience of pain and discomfort. This gives us insight into the potential improvement and relief that may come from putting focus into these 2 factors! 🧐🥳
