What is Craniosacral Therapy?

craniosacral therapy | cranial osteopath

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is a unique way to tap into the central nervous system and work on re-setting and re-balancing your overall body. It opens up movement channels in a unique way that are difficult to access in other treatment techniques,s and has a way to have you feeling a sense of lightness, control and relaxation.

Why is cranial osteopathy used?

Although your body is capable of adapting and compensating to different types of trauma (physical, emotional, psychological), the body’s tolerance can become overwhelmed and eventually disrupted enough that you can’t seem to move past it.  Restoring the movement potential and reducing strain patterns identified with our experienced touch and feel, is the goal in helping your body feel better again.

What does cranial treatment feel like?

Due to the light pressure style of cranial osteopathy it can be used for a wide range of conditions in adults and children, and also used to address the compressive forces in babies brought about by pregnancy and labour.

It usually feels like a gentle touch of the osteopath’s hands, and can have varying experiences for clients from feeling a deep meditative state, to feeling a sense of lovely relaxation in the body. Some clients will even fall asleep.

Other sensations may also be felt (and this can be anywhere in the body):

  • chills or warm rushes
  • electricity
  • pure relaxation where they forgot where they were
  • waves of movement
  • gentle twitching

It’s the type of therapy you understand more when you have felt it for yourself.

Who is it for?

The bigger question is “who is it not for?”

Craniosacral therapy can dive in (gently of course), and unravel the tension or “off” feelings you have.

If you have every had:

  • serious or non-serious head trauma
  • bumps to the jaw, face, head
  • whiplash
  • dental work that you noticed upset your balance
  • tension in your jaw or teeth | bite changes
  • sinus pressures or other those areas in your skull that feel heavier
  • unexplainable nausea, vertigo
  • symptoms that no one can seem to suss out no matter how many tests you’ve had…
