When it comes to hormone health, the menstrual cycle is a delicate dance of fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels. If you’re struggling with irregular periods, PMS, or hormonal imbalances, you may have come across the term “phytoestrogens.” These plant-based compounds mimic estrogen in the body, offering a natural way to support hormonal harmony. One particularly powerful source? Wild yam. Let’s dive into how phytoestrogens affect the menstrual cycle and why wild yam deserves a spot in your wellness routine.
Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring plant compounds that have a structure similar to human estrogen. They bind to estrogen receptors in the body, producing either estrogen-like effects or balancing out excess estrogen activity. These compounds are found in foods like flaxseeds, soy, legumes, and certain herbs, and they play a role in regulating hormones, especially for those experiencing estrogen fluctuations.
Your menstrual cycle is regulated by a fine-tuned interplay of hormones. When estrogen is too low, you might experience irregular cycles, missed periods, or symptoms like hot flashes. On the other hand, excess estrogen (often referred to as estrogen dominance) can lead to heavy periods, breast tenderness, mood swings, and bloating.
Phytoestrogens step in as natural modulators. If your estrogen is low, they provide mild estrogenic activity to support balance. If estrogen levels are too high, they can compete for receptor sites, helping to reduce the impact of excess estrogen. This makes phytoestrogens especially useful for women dealing with hormonal swings, PMS, and perimenopause symptoms.
One of the most well-known phytoestrogen-containing herbs is wild yam (Dioscorea villosa). Traditionally used in herbal medicine, wild yam is often marketed for its progesterone-like effects. While it doesn’t contain actual progesterone, it has a compound called diosgenin, which the body can potentially use to support hormone balance.
Wild yam is commonly found in creams, tinctures, and supplements. Some women use it to help alleviate PMS, menstrual cramps, and symptoms of estrogen dominance. The soothing properties of wild yam also make it a popular choice for easing bloating and digestive discomfort that can accompany hormonal fluctuations.
Perimenopause, the transition phase before menopause, is marked by fluctuating hormone levels that can lead to symptoms like irregular periods, mood swings, hot flashes, and night sweats. Since phytoestrogens help modulate estrogen levels, wild yam may offer relief by providing gentle estrogen-like effects when levels are low. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce hormonal migraine, joint pain and fatigue, common complaints during perimenopause.
Menopause occurs when the menstrual cycle stops completely, and estrogen levels drop significantly. This decline can result in symptoms such as vaginal dryness, decreased bone density, insomnia, and increased risk of osteoporosis. Wild yam, as a phytoestrogen source, may help support hormonal balance and alleviate some of these discomforts. Its potential to mimic estrogen-like effects can be beneficial in managing hot flashes and promoting overall well-being during this stage of life.
If you’re considering adding wild yam to your routine, here are some ways to incorporate it effectively:
Wild Yam Cream – Often used topically, this cream is applied to areas with thin skin (like the inner arms or abdomen) to support hormone balance. (this is our preference – sold in clinic)
Capsules or Tinctures – These can be taken as a supplement to help with cycle regulation and PMS relief.
Teas or Herbal Blends – Drinking wild yam tea can be a gentle way to introduce its benefits.
Phytoestrogens, particularly from sources like wild yam, offer a natural approach to supporting hormonal balance throughout the menstrual cycle. Whether you’re dealing with irregular periods, PMS, perimenopause, menopause, or other hormonal imbalances, incorporating phytoestrogen-rich foods and herbal remedies may be a game-changer. As always, consult with a healthcare professional before making major changes to your wellness routine. Here’s to a balanced, harmonious cycle—naturally!
But here’s a personal story from one of our Osteopaths:
So I (Dr Katie Willy) tried Wild yam cream out for my perimenopause symptoms and wowser it made the difference to a number of things.
First thing I noticed was how lovely and smooth my hands had become, and in just 3 weeks of use. next was the huge energy lift that never seemed to shift no matter how much sleep I got. Instead of dragging my feet getting out of bed, I was waking feeling refreshed, AND it stopped the 3am wake-ups that had been happening for about 6 months (yup…no idea where they came from because I am quite the sleeper).
Then there was something else. I had been having hormonal migraines for 5 years. Never had them prior to that but they are next level. And they became unpredictable in their timing. Not just before or during a cycle, but anytime really and often. Sometimes 3-4 a month which was hugely impacting my life. Now…none…or maybe 1, 3 days before the start of my cycle but much milder.
Ok. So then my husband also thought I was more calm and relaxed around home. Less agitated. Clearly better for family life.
This perimenopause thing can be a shocker but you know what, my experience is now a whole lot lighter.
The answer in my opinion: be CONSISTENT with the tools. I never miss using my wild yam. It’s sits on the en suite bench and I use it twice daily as directed…simple. Consistency is key.
